PURPOSE:To describe the development and implementation of the PAE-TPI programme in the community services of the public mental health network of Catalonia and to assess this programme in terms of epidemiological and clinical variables, and a set of performance measures grouped into 5 domains: accessibility, appropriateness, continuity, effectiveness, and safety. METHOD:Naturalistic study of consecutive cases attended in 12 intensive early intervention programmes for incipient psychosis (PAE-TPI). Inclusion criteria: people in early stages of psychosis or considered to be in at-risk mental state (ARMS) according to CAARMS criteria; age 14-35 years; having less than five years of threshold psychotic symptom evolution; signed informed consent. A descriptive analysis was carried out, using the mean and median statistics for continuous variables and the frequencies and percentages for discrete variables (SPSS v.19). RESULTS:A total of 1533 patients were referred to PAE-TPI programme, of which 17.9% (n=275) did not meet inclusion criteria. Of patients cared for in the programme, 49.1% (n=753) were first-episode psychosis (FEP), 20.7% (n=317) were ARMS, and 12.3% (n=188) were in a critical period. A low transition rate to psychosis (7.9%), a low percentage of completed suicides (0.4%), and a reduced rate of hospital admissions (24.4%) were found. A high percentage of the target population showed optimal results in terms of accessibility (98.3%), appropriateness (69%), continuity (87%), effectiveness (83.1%), and safety (80%) measures. CONCLUSION:In the period 2007-2012, it was possible to develop, implement, and evaluate a new form of care for incipient psychosis (PAE-TPI programme), with optimum results obtained.
